Riyadh Art: Open Call for Tuwaiq International Sculpture Symposium (Saudi Arabia)

Wearing safety goggles and a mask, a man uses a power tool to cut into the bed of stone he is sculpting.

Tuwaiq International Sculpture Symposium (TISS) will consist of 30 sculptors from around the world coming together to produce a series of permanent public sculptures. The Symposium will take place 8 January - 4 February 2023, and is a platform for international and Saudi artists to create public sculptures in a live setting. The work will be on view for 5 days at the end of the Symposium (5-10 February 2022) before moving to various outdoor locations across the city.

The entire creative process will be open and accessible to the public with a programme of different events and talks.

Applications are open to stone sculptors of all nationalities with at least 5 years of experience exhibiting works permanently or temporarily in outdoor spaces or galleries. A highly respected expert panel comprised of five renowned members will review each application, and a final list of 30 artists will be commissioned to create new works at TISS.

The theme for the 4th Tuwaiq Sculpture is ‘Energy of Harmony’. Art reflects on the fundamental characteristic of human existence - the ongoing synthesis of the opposing forces. While omnipresent dualities are rooted in everyday life, they also exist in conversations about aesthetics. To attain harmony means to strike a balance between contrast and similarity, variation and repetition, sparsity and abundance, inactivity and vibrance.

An honorarium of 37,500 SAR (~10,000 EUR) will be paid to every participating artist. Riyadh Art will also provide an economy flight ticket, transportation from and to the airport, and hotel accommodation.
