Each year, Beam Center (a Brooklyn-based not-for-profit organisation that focuses on self-directed growth through ambitious, collaborative project-making) seeks design proposals for ambitious public artworks that will be brought to life through collaborations between youth and creative big thinkers. Projects are realised by a community of more than 100 young people at each of Beam Center’s project sites:
- Beam Project NH
- Location: Beam Camp in Strafford, NH
- Completion: late summer 2023
- Past projects: A Universe (2021), Iceberg (2019) and Time Tomb (2018)
- Beam Project GI
- Location: Beam Camp City on Governors Island
- Completion: late summer 2023
- Past projects: Constellation (2021)
- Beam Project NYC
- Location: To be determined
- Completion: spring 2024
- Past projects: Ubuntu (coming Spring 2023), BEACON (2020-2021), FlipNYC (2019
The Beam Center team works with selected designers to translate their designs into their site-specific context and develop detailed prototyping and fabrication plans. Throughout the project timeline, youth work in collaboration with community members and Beam Staff to complete aspects of the projects.
For each selected project artists receive a $5000 award and have a fabrication budget of around $15,000.
