International mobility is an essential part of the cultural field. We support artists and professionals to operate internationally while working to reimagine mobility as fairer, greener and more inclusive.
On the Move provides information on cultural mobility that is clear, up-to-date, and always free to use. Drawing on the expertise of our network and partners, we source open calls for our website, maintain a collection of more than 60 funding guides, and point to external guidance on specialist topics like visa and tax law.
We also publish thematic reports and publications, undertake research, and design mentoring programmes for artists and organisations. All our work is underpinned by a commitment to engaging with the context, environmental impacts and ethics of mobility.
Our resources
We provide resources for artists and arts workers at all stages of their careers. Our open call listings span all art forms and disciplines, and focus on cross-border projects which cover at least some of the costs of travel. Our funding guides, produced in collaboration with other organisations, detail regular schemes on a national or transnational basis. Our Resources section brings together a body of reports, policy documents, guides and other publications collected over more than a decade.
Working with others
Working with government bodies, arts councils and private foundations, we conduct research and prepare artists to work internationally amid the rise of digital projects, slow travel, long-term collaboration, and other kinds of international exchange. Our flagship professional development programme, PARI, is delivered for the French Ministry of Culture and Institut français.
We are often a partner in EU projects, and regularly participate in events organised with festivals, cultural centres and other networks. Since 2010 On the Move has received ongoing support from the French Ministry of Culture. On the Move is also co-funded by the European Union for the period 2022-2023 (Creative Europe 2021-2027 - Network Strand) with the project Mobility Spaces (MxS).
Our network
On the Move was created as a website by IETM - International network for contemporary performing arts in 2002, became an independent association (Belgium asbl) in 2005, and was then structured as a network in 2009. Today, On the Move’s network counts more than 65 organisations – from national funders, to other networks and info points, to centres for creation. Joined by a small number of individual members, they share a commitment to promoting cultural mobility in all its forms while striving for a fairer sector. The network meets once a year for its annual Cultural Mobility Forum, but collaborates on projects and activities all year round.
The network has a handful of working groups which focus on specific topics. Currently these are the Mobility Information Points group, the (En)forced Mobility group, the Mobility Funders group, the Green Context-specific group, and the International Professional Development Programmes group.
